Aims and Scope

The Open Hypertension Journal is an open access online journal which publishes high quality research articles, authoritative reviews/mini-reviews, letters and guest edited single topic issues in all areas of hypertension research. Coverage includes basic to clinical research, pathogenesis, pharmacology, clinical hypertension, epidemiology, nephrology, endocrinology, neuroscience, genetics, blood pressure, hypertension and related cardiovascular disorders and factors, pediatric hypertension, prevention and treatment of hypertension.

The Renin Angiotensin System and the Metabolic Syndrome

The renin angiotensin system (RAS) is important for fluid and blood pressure regulation. Recent studies suggest that an overactive RAS is involved in the metabolic syndrome. This article discusses recent advances on how genetic alteration of the RAS affects cardiovascular and metabolic phenotypes, with a special emphasis on the potential role of angiotensin-independent effects of renin.
